As the evenings become darker, vehicle security is more important than ever. Opportunist thieves often target vehicles where valuables have been left on display, sometimes taking just seconds to break in and steal property.

Recently, officers from the Northampton Neighbourhood Policing Team, alongside our Police Cadets, carried out proactive vehicle crime prevention patrols, checking over 200 vehicles and speaking with residents about the importance of keeping vehicles secure.

Items seen left in vehicles included work lanyards, bags, coats, parcels, laptops, dashcams and other personal belongings. While these items may not seem valuable, they can be enough to attract the attention of a thief.

We would like to remind residents to:

✅ Always lock your vehicle, even when parked outside your home.
✅ Remove all valuables from your vehicle whenever possible.
✅ Keep bags, coats, parcels and electronic devices out of sight.
✅ Remove work IDs and lanyards that may reveal personal information.
✅ Park in well-lit areas where possible.
✅ Check that all windows and doors are fully secured before leaving your vehicle.

Remember, thieves will often try door handles looking for easy opportunities. Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime.

Together, we can make Northampton a safer place by reducing opportunities for vehicle crime.
